Mental Health Consultant #1447

The Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant provides mental health consultation to teachers, home visitors and parents/guardians as part of early childhood programming. This position works almost entirely within a partner agency and/or in the community.

Location: This position is based out of LifeWorks NW's Tigard site. 

Pay/Benefits: $61,309 starting annual salary, plus Full benefits

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Meets performance standards for direct client care, documentation, quality (including engagement and evidence-based practices), and teamwork as defined in the performance review. Completes required service hours per month according to contract and LifeWorks NW expectations.
  • Follows all LifeWorks NW and partner policies regarding provision of observation, consultation and referral. Adheres to LifeWorks NW and partner policies and respects the role of consultant advising and consulting teachers and parents. Ensures all services and consultations follow all LifeWorks NW and partner guidelines.
  • Completes monthly calendar of activities for partner and LifeWorks NW.
  • Completes written observations of classrooms, individual children, teacher consultations, and parent consultations.
  • Observes students where teachers/home visitors or parents/guardians indicate a need for assistance. Consults with teachers/home visitors and families. Makes recommendations and referrals both verbally and in written form.
  • Works with teachers/home visitors and parents/guardians, assessing the child's situations, capabilities, and problems to determine what services are required to meet their needs. 
  • Consults with parents/guardians, teachers/home visitors, early childhood partner administrators, testing specialists, and/or other professionals to develop individual plans, recommendations and/or trainings designed to resolve area of concern as identified by observation or identified by teachers/home visitors and parents/guardians. 
  • Supports and consults with teachers/home visitors to build social emotional skills in young children. May be required to prepare and deliver teacher/home visitor trainings on topics related to these issues and their causes or topics as requested by early childhood staff. 
  • Prepares and provides parent/guardian trainings regarding discipline strategies, improving positive family relationship, managing stress, etc. (possibly during evening hours).
  • Identifies cases where children and/or families could benefit from additional community supports (such as therapy, parenting class, etc.) and supports the family with the referral process. 
  • Maintains awareness of community referral resources and provides referrals to teachers, children and families as appropriate
  • Advises families when appropriate on how they could be helped by counseling. 
  • Provides follow up services with families and teachers/home visitors as required by partner.
  • Documents and maintains student records to ensure compliance with agency, partner and contract guidelines. Maintains child and family confidentiality. Maintains accurate and complete records as required by laws, LifeWorks NW and partner policies, and administrative regulations. Maintains daily log of activities performed and hours worked. 
  • Participates in regular individual and team meetings with supervisor.  Attends informational and clinical meetings which may include all staff and team meetings, and consultation with other staff. Completes online and required trainings as assigned.
  • Serves as back-up for other staff when needed.
  • Checks e-mail/voice mail daily and, when working, responds to contacts within 48 hours. 
  • Provides culturally appropriate consultation, advocacy, and community collaboration.
  • Travels between sites or in the community.
  • Work with an integrated team including educational and health partners.  Coordinates services and demonstrates respect for each team member's contributions to the team.
  • Participate in a culture of feedback at the agency by eliciting feedback to promote professional growth and assess work effectiveness.
  • Use Feedback-Informed Treatment service delivery approach to obtain and review feedback from clients regarding the fit and effectiveness of the services provided to them.

Qualifications

  • This position requires a valid and active QMHP credential certification through MHACBO or a valid and active status (licensed or registered intern) with an approved Oregon licensing board.
  • Master's degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or a Mental Health related field
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct an assessment, including identifying precipitating events, gathering histories of mental and physical health, alcohol and other drug use, past mental health services and criminal justice contacts, assessing family, social and working relationships and conducting a mental status examination; complete a five-axis DSM diagnosis; write and supervise the implementation of an Individual Service and Support Plan; and provide individual, family and/or group therapy within the scope of their training.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills and ability to provide culturally competent consultation services to diverse client populations and maintain a cooperative working relationship with others in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of attachment theory, developmental milestones, and appropriate range of development by age. 
  • Demonstrated compliance with confidentiality and knowledge of community resources and treatment agencies enabling appropriate referrals for specific client needs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word.  Ability to master proprietary software including electronic health record system required. 
  • Driving is required for this position.  Requires access to a car and valid driver's license.
  • Ability to perform essential functions of job without creating a direct threat to the safety of self or others
